Spider-Man Trailers Breakdown, Thoughts & Things You May Have Missed
These Spider-Man trailers are amazing and showed us some really interesting things and leave me with some theories and speculation that I would love to talk about.
The trailer first starts off with some establishing shots in Queens then we see some guys walking into the Queens Community Bank and they have these interesting looking weapons, I think these weapons are made from Chitauri technology that's from the Tinkerer (played by Michael Chernus).
|
Chitauri Weapons |
Just after that, we see a shot of Spider-Man standing behind them leaning against a wall while the robbers are putting money into their bags as one takes guard.
|
Ultimate Comics Spider-Man Comic Comparison |
This scene is a reference to a comic panel from Ultimate Comics Spider-Man. Spidey then deliverers the line "Sup guys. Wait a minute, you guys aren't the real avengers, I can tell, Hulk gives it away". Which is a perfect line, this Spider-Man is the most humorous he's ever been in the movies, it shows us this is the wise-cracking Spider-Man I have been waiting for and I'm sure loads of other people have been wanting. I also like that ironic poster behind Spidey there.
|
Identity Theft Poster |
I find this poster behind them saying "Identity Theft? We have you covered." funny as there are guys right there robbing this bank wearing Avengers masks, they are pretty much committing two crimes at the same time.
|
Spider-Man Dodging A Punch |
We see a part where Spidey gets into a fight with the robbers and during the fight, he clings to the ceiling and dodges all the punches being thrown his way.
It would be nice to see a Spider-Man movie with a new variation on the Spidey-Sense we've seen in the movies for once, other than a sound associated with it. Would be interesting to see how they explain it, in the first Sam Raimi Spider-Man movie, it's explained as "a set of reflexes with nerve conduction velocity so fast that some researchers believe it almost borders on precognition, an early awareness of danger, a Spider-Sense." but that is in relation with a spider in the lab at the start of the movie, not paying attention for a second and you'll miss it.
|
Spider-Sense |
In the animated series, the Spider-Sense presents a psychological
awareness of Spider-Man's surroundings. It allows Spider-Man to detect
danger. The greater the danger or how close the danger is, increases the
tingling sensation. It also allows Spider-Man to navigate when unable
to see or disoriented. We sort of see this here in the trailer but I
would like to see it explained and shown a lot better than it has in
previous films.
Later on, we see Peter walking through the busy corridors of his high school, Midtown School of Science & Technology and we see familiar faces on a wall in the distance.
|
Howard Stark |
One of these faces is Howard Stark when he's older.
|
Howard Stark |
And the other on this wall, we should remember from WWII with Steve Rogers.
|
Dr. Abraham Erskine |
The face in the middle of the picture is Dr. Abraham Erskine from Captain America: The First Avenger.
|
Dr. Abraham Erskine |
We are also introduced to Liz Allan by Peter saying "Did Liz get a new top" to Ned Leeds as they are both fantasizing about her.
|
Liz Allan |
Liz Allan in the comics ends up getting married to Harry Osborn and becoming Liz Allan-Osborn, in the future, they have a son together, remember Harry Osborn, the son of Norman Osborn the future Green Goblin. She was also a love interest before Gwen Stacy and Mary Jane.
We now we are introduced to who Ned Leeds is and what he looks like, he's Peters best friend in high school.
|
Ned Leeds & Peter |
Ned Leeds in the comics eventually becomes the Hobgoblin, but in this, his personality seems more like Ganke Lee from the Ultimate Earth though. Ganke is a Korean American and the best friend of Miles Morales as well as knows Miles' secret identity.
We are also introduced to Zendaya's character called Michele Gonzales.
|
Michele Gonzales |
Michele Gonzales is actually a character in the comics, she isn't as well known as say Mary Jane or Gwen Stacey as a love interest, she was his girlfriend for a period in the comics when he was not with Mary Jane. She's a really bad ass detective that Spider-Man worked with.
In this Michele doesn't seem like a love interest at the moment, Marvel said "Zendaya will play a key role in the ensemble they are building around Tom Holland" but how many interviews and promotional things did Zendaya do for Spider-Man, and Liz Allan played by Laura Harrier who seems to be the love interest did no interviews or promotional stuff, so I wonder if there's going to be an arc in this movie or the trilogy where she ends up becoming supermodel hot and more than a friend, because this is what Zendaya normally looks like.
|
Zendaya & Tom Holland |
We also see a blonde haired girl played by Angourie Rice, she's said to be playing Betty Brant, who was also an early love interest before Gwen Stacy and Mary Jane. Also in the comics she is the future wife of Ned Leeds.
|
Betty Brant |
If we are to believe the casting list, Angourie Rice is playing Betty Brandt. There are also some interesting things we can see are Tiffany Espensen playing someone called Cindy, Bokeem Woodbine playing Shultz/Shocker #2, Isabella Amara playing Sally and Ethan Dizon playing Tiny.
|
Casting List |
Tiffany Espensen is playing a character called Cindy, this is someone from more recent comics and I think she could be playing Cindy Moon, I don't think she will be playing that character fully but she will just have that name as an Easter Egg and could follow up with it later on in the franchise.
|
Tiffany Espensen |
This is what She Tiffany Espensen looks like, I think she looks perfect for the role.
|
Cindy Moon (Silk) |
Cindy Moon is also known as Silk. The same spider that bit Peter Parker also bit a fellow student on the field trip and was also given spider-powers, she, for the most part, has the same abilities as Peter, wall crawling, enhanced strength, her own variation of Spidey-Sense called Silk-Sense (Which is better than Spidey's) and even powers Spider-Man doesn't even have.
Isabella Amara is playing a character called Sally, I'm pretty sure she's playing Sally Avril was friends with Liz Allan, Brian McKeever (Tiny) as well as Peter Parker.
|
Isabelle Amara |
This is what Isabella Amara looks like
|
Bluebird |
After Sally and her friend named Jason witnessed Spider-Man in a fight with a villain Sally ran over and kicked him in the head staggering him while Spider-Man delivers the final blow knocking him out. This later on eventually inspires Sally to become Bluebird.
Ethan Dizon is playing a character called Brian McKeever from the comics.
|
Ethan Dizon |
This is what Ethan Dizon looks like
|
Brian McKeever (Tiny) |
Brian McKeever also known as Tiny played by Ethan Dizon was a classmate of Peter Parker's and was once a bully towards him but ended up gaining so respect to him after Peter helped him with his homework.
On the casting list, it says Bokeem Woodbine is playing Shultz/Shocker #2 which makes me think there are two guys that are going to have a Shocker relevance.
|
Shockers - Bokeem Woodbine, Logan Marshall-Green |
From the Official Trailer and the International Trailer, we get to see two people wearing a jacket with the yellow sleeves and criss-cross pattern on them that is very Shocker like. And even on the casting list, Bokeem Woodbine is called Shocker #2 so I'll refer to Logan Marshall-Green as Shocker #1 (On the right) and Bokeem Woodbine as Shocker #2 (On the left).
|
Shocker | |
You can see the similarities with the sleeves of the jacket, but in the set photos, we actually see a full costume.
|
Shocker Set Photo |
Seeing this costume (I dont know if it's real or not) behind the scenes and seeing two different people with Shocker like sleeves it leads me to think of a theory. I think the Tinkerer makes/modifies Chitauri technology for gang/gangs or thugs in exchange for something, where I get this from is Michael Keaton's character the Vulture/Adrian Toomes saying "The world's changing boys, time we change too". From the context of that, it sounds like he's talking to a group of people and it's before they get Chitauri technology, I think this is happening just before they go to see the Tinkerer or to make a deal with him to get the technology. Vulture may be working with the two guys with the Sonic like weapons.
I speculate that something happens to Shocker #1 and he gets caught, killed or something and it leaves Shocker #2 left and he gets an upgrade with two gauntlets instead of one, with the rest of a suit. If you look at the gauntlet Shocker #2 is wearing before he punches the bus (Picture on the right).
|
Shocker #2 Gauntlet, Crossbones' Gauntlet |
Now look at the gauntlets Crossbones wears in Captain America Civil War (Picture on the right). Both the Shocker #2 and Crossbones gauntlets look pretty similar which leads me to think the Tinkerer somehow got his hands on them and modified them or the Tinkerer made the original possibly then got a hold of them again and modified them.
I've talked a lot about the Tinkerer, let me explain who he is. The Tinkerer is one of Spider-Man's oldest villains alongside Chameleon and Vulture.
|
Tinkerer |
The Tinkerers real name is Phineas Mason and is known for repairing things as well as making gadgets and technology that other super-villains use like Mysterio's suit, the Scorpion's tail, Rocket Racer's skateboard and the Big Wheel among other items for various villains and once worked with the Vulture and in more recently the Hobgoblin.
|
Michael Chernus |
Michael Chernus will be playing the Tinkerer in Spider-Man: Homecoming. Details released from Heroic Hollywood has said in Homecoming, Phineas Mason is a former Stark Industries employee who
was personally fired by Tony Stark several years ago. Upset with his
dismissal, Phineas has now resorted to providing technology to the
movie's two other super villains, The Vulture and the Shocker, to prove
to Tony he made a mistake firing him.
We also get this funny part in the trailer with Tony and Peter talking in the car.
|
Tony & Peter in Tony's car |
They are talking about how does he become an Avenger, it ends with Tony leaning over Peter to open the door to let him out and Peter things he is giving him a hug, which is interesting Tony doesn't like being handed things and isn't one for opening his own door usually, seeing this gives Tony a father like figure feeling which I think we'll see more of in the movie as well as Tony helping/training.
One thing you might not have noticed in this segment, was on Tony's face you can see a cut and a bruise that corresponds directly to Civil War, this is I really nice piece continuity and detail they have added.
|
Wounds in Civil War compared to Spider-Man trailer |
This makes me think this takes place during the events of Civil War and this is him dropping Peter off home as his wounds aren't healed as well as in a BTS (Behind The Scene) photo we actually see Peter getting out of the car with a briefcase.
|
BTS photo of that scene |
This briefcase looks exactly like the one we saw in the Trailer Teaser.
|
Peter wearing old suit |
The way this scene plays out, the expression in Peter's voice and the fact he's wearing his old suit, this is definitely set during Civil War and this is him getting the new suit for the first time, which is further confirmed at the end of the Trailer Teaser with peter saying "Ah this is the coolest thing I've ever seen".
What I think is cool, Peter is Vlogging this experience, which updates the character to modern days where people Vlog all the time, I'm not sure who Peter is Vlogging for? maybe for himself or to show Ned Leeds, but how could Peter have met him since Tony hasn't given Peter his grant yet so how would Aunt May afford to put him into Midtown School of Science & Technology?
In the trailer it shows Peter in class watching himself as Spider-Man from Civil War and it looks to be at Midtown School of Science & Technology, which is confirmed as in the trailer you can see Flash Thompson all the way to the right, Peter would probably be watching this clip about a week or two after that fight happens in Civil War. I think that is interesting I'm not sure how quickly grants go through and could have changed to a new school, possibly he could have been going there the whole time, though.
In this segment of the trailer, we see yet another familiar face.
|
Bruce Banner |
If you look at the black and white pictures above the white board of famous physicists you can see all the way to the left is Bruce Banner.
|
Bruce Banner |
There are also nice Star Wars Easter Eggs.
|
Death Star |
Yes, Easter Eggs there's more than this one where you see Ned Leeds holding a Lego Death Star, which is pretty cool. We also have one just a few seconds earlier when he's climbing on the ceiling.
|
AT-AT |
In the right bottom corner, there's an AT-AT, you might not have noticed this at first. which is a nice call back to Civil War when he talks about taking down Ant-Man Snowspeeder style.
|
Star Wars Figures |
There's some Star Wars Action Figures up on the shelf behind him, as well as.
|
X-Wing | |
And almost unnoticeable, right to the side of Ned Leeds dropping the Lego Death Star we can see the front of an X-Wing.
We get to see a really cool feature of his suit, where it looks like he presses his symbol and his suit loosens and falls off. Well there's a flaw I can see there while fighting a bad guy just presses it and it falls aha, that's no good, so I'm sure there's something else to it than that like only Peter can press it or something.
|
Spidey Suit |
Kevin Feige has said the suit can do a lot more than Peter Parker realizes right now, so I think we'll see a lot more really neat features during this movie, maybe also some extra tech like Spider-Tracer which would be cool.
We get a nice shot of the Vulture, whose suit I think is made by the Tinkerer.
|
Vulture |
In this shot, we are first introduced to Vulture. Michael Keaton's Vulture is supposed to have this horrific entrance, the way he is in the trailer he's kinda scary but Tom Holland spoke about him like he was going to terrifying to Peter the first time he appeared. I think his character will start off as a normal criminal but will end up getting this advanced technology from the Tinkerer. What we see in this part if the trailer it looks like the Vulture is flying down the inside of the hotel we see later on in the trailer that Peter and Ned are at.
|
Inside of Hotel |
This part here where we get to see the helmet for the first time I think is in a different place than where he flew down in the Hotel.
|
Vulture Helmet |
If you look at the background, you can see its orange and has pipes on the roof, so I think this takes place on the ferry at the back end of the trailer.
|
Staten Island Ferry |
As you can see they look like they are in the same place. I'm pretty certain these two part takes place on the Staten Island Ferry.
So when we see this segment of the trailer -
|
Vulture & Spider-Man Fight |
we can see that Spider-Man has his original suit on at what looks to be Coney Island which means two things One - Vulture has been a villain of Spidey's for a while, since before the events of Civil War, which can sort of be confirmed here
|
Tony & Peter at Avengers HQ |
where Tony and Peter are walking around at Avengers HQ, Tony says to Peter "Forget the flying monster guy, there are people who handle this sorta thing". And where I think this part takes place is during the events of Civil War and they are there to design or talk about his new suit.
The second thing it could be is that Peter's new suit gets wrecked and he has to go back to the old suit.
When Vulture and Peter are at Coney Island on the beach, we see that Peter has his mask is off, so Vulture has to know Spider-Man is Peter Parker.
|
Adrian Toomes |
Later on we see Michael Keaton's character Adrian Toomes sitting in a car without his Vulture suit on leaning between the seats saying "Don't mess with me, cause I will kill you and everybody you love" which could be further evidence that he knows his identity, but he might not be talking to peter, in a twist know one would see he could for all we know could be talking to Ned Leeds.
|
Washington Monument |
We see a couple of segments of the Midtown school on an excursion to Washington Monument, as well as Spider-Man being there.
|
Spider-Man at Washington Monument |
But Spidey doesn't get there until after an attack happens inside Washington Monument.
|
Attack inside Washington Monument |
How I know the attack happens before Spidey gets there, if you see on the ground under him you can see that there is glass already broken, so someone was already there and broke the glass elevator doors/walls.
|
Spider-Man in Washington Monument |
The person I think that attacked the Monument is Vulture if you look at the picture below from the International Trailer we see Spidey running to the Monument but the people in the background are looking towards the sky meaning something or someone is in the sky and I think that someone is Vulture.
|
Spidey running to Washington Monument |
When Spidey gets inside we see him at the elevator door holding onto his web which is going down the elevator shaft.
|
Spider-Man holding someone with web |
What or who is on his web it could be Liz Allan. From this picture here taken from the International Trailer, she let goes of something that was keeping her up like a hand or something.
|
Liz Allan falling down elevator shaft |
But if you look at the bottom of the pictures of the elevator with Spider-Man.
|
Spidey holding web at elevator shaft |
Now look at the ones with Liz, you can see in the red boxes there are hinges that are not in the ones with Spider-Man, it's a classic editing of the trailer to make you think Spider-Man drops her or has her on his web, he might not actually have her on the end of his web.
|
Liz Falling |
Why I think Spider-Man doesn't have her on the end of his web is the fact that how far away he is holding his web (See "Spidey holding the web at elevator shaft" Picture Above), If he was shooting his web to get her wouldn't he already at the door of the elevator rather then be holding his web then get dragged closer. what could be happening is they are at the same elevator but they are on opposite sides, someone is trying to hold her up but accidentally slips causing her to fall and for what's happening with Spidey I think is he was holding on to someone else who was closer and they fell causing him to slide forward possibly. Hard to know for sure all of this is just speculation.
This isn't the only attack on the Monument either.
|
Explosion at Washington Monument |
This is the Entrance to Washington Monument you can see exploding here. This isn't actually the first time Spidey has been to Washington Monument, he once went there in the comics.
|
Spider-Man in Washington |
In the back half of the trailer we see Donald Glover standing in the background of Shocker #1 firing his weapon at something in the bushes, we don't know who Donal Glover's character is.
|
Donald Glover |
I think Donald Glover is playing they guy that supplies the people like the ones who broke into the bank as well as the two Shockers with weapons from the Tinkerer who's making the weapons. Donald Glover could be distributing them around he's like the dealer to them so they don't make direct contact with the tinkerer themselves. What would also be a nice addition was if his name was Aaron Davis in the Ultimate Comics he is Miles Morales' uncle.
|
Aaron Davis |
Aaron Davis is also known as Prowler in the Ultimate Comics, he also had an affiliation with the Tinkerer as well, which also makes me think that Donald Glover could be Aaron Davis.
|
Prowler (Aaron Davis) |
We get to see yet another weapon that releases purple energy blasts, I've watched the clip frame by frame a couple of times and looks to be a different weapon from the others.
|
Vulture with a weapon |
In the second last clip, we see Spidey holding the Staten Island Ferry together with his webbing, this shows how much strength he and his webbing are.
|
Spider-Man holding ferry together |
This has to be the best ending to a trailer, this has such an iconic look to it.
|
Iron Man & Spider-Man |
This could be Tony helping train Peter after they get back from the events of Civil War, not necessarily at the start of the movie but I think it will be near the start or it could be them going off to a big fight with the Vulture. I'm not expecting too much Iron Man in the movie maybe like a role reversal of Civil War there might be as much Iron Man/ Tony Stark as there was Peter in that movie maybe a little bit more but not too much more.
|
https://www.instagram.com/p/BN8aYUBhPH_/?taken-by=arminies |
I also don't expect to see any other Avenger level characters in the first movie, maybe not in the second one either.
|
Spider-Man Title |
I like the yellow and red logo design, it sort of shows Iron Man with those two colours, possible winking at the Iron-Spider suit.
As a kid I loved watching the Spider-Man Animated series that went from 1994-1998, In it Spidey faced off against classic villains, including the Kingpin, the Green Goblin, the Shocker, Doctor Octopus, the Vulture and Venom. I would love to see Kingpin turn up somewhere but I don't think there's going to be any Kingpin in the actual movie. But Vincent D'Onofrio did say he would love to be in Spider-Man. The funny thing is everybody wants to be in a Spider-Man film like you can see Clark Gregg sitting off in the distance waving his hand, please put me in a Spider-Man movie, this would be so much fun. Clark Gregg actually voiced, well his character from the movies but in the Ultimate Spider-Man TV series. So what I think is going to happen is, is if they ever work Kingpin into a Spider-Man movie it will just be as an Easter Egg, you'll hear about the Kingpin of crime, but he'll stay in the Manhattan area, you won't hear about him so much in Queens where Spider-Man spends most of his time.
|
Spider-Man the Animated Series |
There were also lots of great team-ups in the series, like with Iron Man, Daredevil, Doctor Strange, the Punish, as well as Spider-Men from other dimensions, among many more heroes. I would like to see him team up with Daredevil in at least one of the movies since he is fairly close to Queens, but we probably won't, maybe at most someone confusing him for daredevil since they both have red suits, that's about it, an Easter Egg. Something that would be really out there but awesome is to see some Spider-Verse stuff, no I don't think they are going to do that but as for other Spider-people, Silk is in the movie well the character who turns into Silk is but they might not necessarily do that. Spider-Man in the comics is like one of the most popular characters of all time which means there's going to be a lot of Spider-Verse characters out there, so they're probably not going to do that. But with characters like Ned Leeds they might not do Hobgoblin and like Silk, they might not actually have them put on their costumes but they do exists in this universe. the thing is the more characters you put in the less time you have to develop other characters. I wouldn't expect to see Miles Morales, Spider-Gwen, Silk or even Venom have their costumes in the new Spider-Man trilogy.
The Animated series had an awesome intro and theme song that went with it, all the other Spider-Man Shows had a theme song even the Sam Raimi Spider-Man movie had its own theme song that if you heard would instantly know, hey that's Spider-Man. So I wonder if Marvel are going to give us a Spider-Man theme song in these new movies or at least change up the music they use, as the themes and songs they have in their movies (not including Guardians of the Galaxy and Avengers) are not bad but you don't have a theme that sticks with the character for more than one movie and you never usually remember them as you would with the first Spider-Man movie or like the TV Shows. Guardians of the Galaxy has proven you can change it up and have the songs work, so I hope they use songs that fit with a teenage boy in high school and or have a theme song that you would remember is Spider-Man.

Jon Watts has said these villains are going to be different from other Marvel villains because if Peter Parker a regular kid can become a superhero then there have to be some regular guys who can become villains/super-villains. that makes complete sense to me.
This movie looks like its bringing the essence of Spider-Man from the comics and what Stan Lee envisioned, Stan Lee wanted a teenager who had a lot of personal problems, he would be poor, live with an aunt who was always sick and nothing goes right for him. he wanted a hero that was an ordinary kid. This version of Spider-Man seems to be more based upon these things that I think is fundamental to the character, it's what sets him apart from the rest of the superhero back then and think this version of Spider-Man would make Stan proud. This version of Spider-Man feels like it has taken inspiration from all sorts of runs of the character, like Miles Morales, Ultimate Comics 1610 and the 616 universes.
One thing Stan Lee mentions about Spider-Mans creation was the fact he wanted him to have web-shooters that peter had to come up with.
|
Spider-Man's Web-Shooter |
Stan Lee talking about The Amazing Spider-Mans web-shooters said "The one thing I liked about Peter's web-shooters was the fact that they made him more vulnerable, At any crucial moment he could run out of web fluid and be forced to rely on his wits."
"The organic webs which Sam Raimi gave him and which Jim Cameron also would have given him had he directed the first Spidey film certainly worked beautifully in the movie, and perhaps allowed for better special effects than my idea of limited webbing might have done."
|
Spider-Man's Web-Wings |
Talking about parts of Spidey's costume, these web-wings that are inspired by Steve Ditko's original Spidey suit.
|
Spider-Man First Appearance |
I think Steve Ditko would be proud of what they have done with the new Spider-Man costume.
